Welcome to America, a nation conceived in liberty, on the idea that each man is allowed one vote. In the beginning, each white, affluent man over the age of 21 was allowed a voice in a constitutional republic, what subsequently becomes a battleground for democracy. Vote for America! explores the electoral process, its past, present, and future. It discovers why the U.S. is not even in the top ten list of countries with full democracies. It questions why America is so much of an aspirant to immigrants, selling itself as the “land of opportunity” when in truth that opportunity is out of reach to many in a “limited” democracy. The paths to opportunity in a uniquely American experience come with a vote, an indirect whisper that's been systematically homogenized and marginalized. It fills a patriotic sense of interest, of participation in a government said to be “by the people,” that is subject to suppression, miscalculation, domestic or foreign manipulation, or abject nullification.
This book exposes, in every relevant detail, how that bipartisan system was tailor-made to keep one party fighting to suppress peoples' right to vote, while the other fights to protect and encourage it. And that is the engine of democracy.
